A Heavy Show For A Conservative Place

The faculty wanted its students to be more familiar with classic works. Thus began the American Classic slot in the spring semester. Streetcar was picked for that slot, my sophomore year. The previous year was Of Mice and Men and The Crucible followed. When we decided to do Streetcar the actors worked on their characters a lot and really dug into the psyches of Williams’ characters. The director, Adam Hester, wanted the actors to fully engage into the minds of the characters while leaving their true selves behind. Disclaimers went on our posters and mailers about the show being violent and suggesting children under the age of 14 shouldn’t attend the show. Hester was really making sure the community was taken care of to not upset anyone because of our choice for the classic.

Working In The Black Box

Our school has two theatres, Fulks, a proscenium thrust with 325 seats, and Culp, a black box free form that can sit around 150. Streetcar was slated to be performed in Culp so every scene would be kept intimate and close. The first row was about less than 6 feet away from the stage so it was definitely intense. But with the action in your lap it turns the show into something much more indeed. It would have been fine in Fulks but there was no way the theatre could embody the entire New Orleans vibe the way Culp did. It felt like we were in Stanley and Stella’s apartment. I when Blanche complained about the weather the audience could really empathize.

Talkbacks With Doctors

After each performance there was a scheduled “talk back” with the audience and a guest speaker. A talk back is where the cast and crew invite the audience to stay after the production and learn a little more about the play, the author, and the overall history of the production. For this show the characters were highlighted and the choices that Tennessee Williams made when he wrote them. Every night the guest speaker, people with PhD’s in English or Psychology would explain a little more about why Blanche does the things that she does. It was a great way to learn more and educate our patrons about why we choose to do the show and that we really thought about every aspect of it to create it on stage.

ACU students aptly bring 'Streetcar' icons to life

Streetcar, like most ACU shows, is strong top to bottom.
