First Solo Prop Design

This show was the first show that I did the props for at ACU. It was a summer show and there were only four of working on it; me, the set designer, student Nic Graves, the technical director, Travis Eason, and one carpenter, Austin Walker. The four us built the full set in two weeks and dressed it the third week, which I learned I would be doing with the designer. Nic gave me a ton a of liberties and while the boys did some heavy lifting, I went shopping for the 60s furnishings and searched the internet for propaganda posters and magazine covers. I really enjoyed dressing the set with Nic, because it didn’t feel like “props” – it felt like I was designing a 1960s home and was really thinking of the items they needed in a house that they could use, not was required.

Period Pieces

I was specifically proud of a piece I found that wasn’t required but could definitely be funny was a surf board from the era. Andy comes home from the beach during one scene and watching him sun burnt, frustrated, and ready to pass out walk up to the doorway with this huge board on his shoulders trying to avoid hitting things with it was so funny. We didn’t need it, but it added just a little more character to the show as a whole. That also goes with the typewriter – which was important and required. But it was period and it worked! That was the best thing. Being able to hear the beep at the end of the page and pulling it out to see actual words the actors typed made the scenes all the more real.

'Star Spangled Girl' intensely funny

This comedy is exceedingly amusing and overwhelming to the audience's eyes and ears. The actors exceedingly portray their obscure characters and never leave a dull moment in the production.
